Hormone Therapy

At our centers we are not only concerned about sexual health but also hormonal balance and wellness. Menopause and hormonal imbalances can cause a variety of unwanted symptoms. Using hormones that your body recognizes as identical to the ones it produces, is a way to naturally replace these deficiencies, allowing you to feel normal again.

Estrogen Deficiency

Estrogen is the primary female sex hormone. Many women don’t realize that “estrogen” is a class of hormones that are made of three different molecules. Estradiol is the most potent of these estrogens and estrone and estriol are its weaker forms. Estrogen is made by the ovaries, prior to menopause, but it is also manufactured by the adrenal glands and in fat cells.

Estrogen has a host of positive effects on the body. It has been shown to protect against heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis. It helps relieve the symptoms of menopause, low sexual desire, depression and urinary incontinence.

At Philadelphia Center for Sexual Medicine and New York Sexual Medicine we only use bioidentical hormones to treat your estrogen deficiency.  Bioidentical hormones are hormones that have the same chemical and molecular make up as your bodies naturally occurring hormones. These hormones exert a similar effect as your own hormones. Synthetic hormones do not have the same chemical and molecular make up as your naturally occurring hormones. One synthetic estrogen that is very commonly prescribed by most physicians is Premarin™. Premarin™ is made from pregnant mare (horse) urine and is a combination of horse estrogens and estradiol. This may have unwanted side effects.

There are many types of estrogen therapies from pills to creams and gels, to patches and vaginal insertables. Dr. Gittens will take the time to discuss the pros and cons of each and recommend the best modalities for your particular situation.
