Menopause: Reclaim your

Hot flashes, the inability to concentrate, sleeplessness. low libido, pain with sex and mood swings are all signs of menopause. Being able to manage these symptoms under a physician monitored program can be life changing. We are here to help with this transitional stage in life.

Menopause occurs when our ovaries stop releasing eggs and producing female hormones. Loss of the female hormone estrogen can weaken your bones, for example, increase cholesterol levels that contribute to coronary artery disease, cause emotional changes, vaginal changes and urinary tract changes. Other hormones that decrease include testosterone, progesterone and DHEA. Preventive care during the stages of menopause offers an opportunity to improve your quality of life as you age.

What is menopause and what are its effects?

Menopause is a natural biological process that occurs when the ovaries stop releasing eggs and producing female hormones. The loss of estrogen, in particular, can lead to various physical and emotional changes. These changes may include weakened bones, increased cholesterol levels, emotional fluctuations, vaginal alterations, and urinary tract adjustments. Other hormones, such as testosterone, progesterone, and DHEA, also decrease during menopause. Taking a proactive approach to your health during this time can significantly enhance your quality of life as you age.

What Are the Stages of Menopause?

Perimenopause

This transitional stage occurs before the ovaries permanently stop releasing eggs but when hormone levels begin to decline. Symptoms can be intermittent and may include hot flashes, night sweats, and irregular periods. Perimenopause typically begins about four years before menopause.

Menopause

Officially, menopause is declared twelve months after a woman’s last period, marking the end of her reproductive years and a substantial decrease in hormone levels.

What Happens to a Woman’s Hormones as She Ages?

Decrease in Hormone Levels

Hormone Levels Decline: By the age of 50, most women have experienced a decline of around 50% in hormone function for estrogen, progesterone, thyroid, DHEA, melatonin, and growth hormone. Progesterone is one of the first hormones to decrease, starting around age 35, leading to various symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disturbances, PMS, mood swings, irregular periods, and weight gain. Estrogen levels also begin to decrease around age 35, resulting in hot flashes, skin and vaginal dryness, urinary tract issues, bone loss, and cognitive changes. Testosterone levels start declining in the late 30s and onward, contributing to a decreased desire for sex, joint and bone discomfort, muscle weakness, mood swings, anxiety, muscle loss, and weight gain.
