Understanding Your Gut Can Be an Important Step Toward Better Health

Your gut is much more than a digestive system. The gastrointestinal tract interacts with nutrition, metabolism, immune function, inflammation, hormonal signaling and the nervous system. The trillions of microorganisms that make up the gut microbiome are an important part of this complex environment.

At RWell Center, our role is to help patients better understand what may be happening within the gastrointestinal system. We can order advanced gut and microbiome testing, interpret the findings within the context of the patient’s symptoms and overall health, and help determine the most appropriate next steps.

Our goal is not simply to provide a test result. It is to provide understanding, direction and a pathway forward.

Our Role in Gut Health

RWell Center is not a gastroenterology center, and advanced microbiome testing does not replace evaluation by a gastroenterologist when one is medically indicated.

Our role is complementary. We help patients investigate their gut health by ordering appropriate testing, interpreting results, identifying potential areas of concern and helping determine the appropriate next step.

When findings or symptoms warrant further medical evaluation, we can help direct patients toward a gastroenterologist or other appropriate specialist.

Test. Understand. Personalize. Monitor.

What Can Gut & Microbiome Testing Evaluate?

The gastrointestinal system is a complex ecosystem. Rather than focusing on a single bacterium or biomarker, RWell™ Gut & Microbiome Testing can provide information across several areas of gastrointestinal health.

Gut Microbiome
Beneficial organisms, commensal bacteria and overall microbial patterns.

Digestive Function & Nutrient Absorption
Markers associated with pancreatic function, bile acids, intestinal pH, digestion and nutrient processing.

Inflammation & Immune Health
Selected markers of intestinal inflammation and immune activity, including calprotectin, lactoferrin and secretory IgA.

Potential Pathogens
Selected bacteria, parasites, fungi and viruses that may be relevant to gastrointestinal health.

Gut Metabolites
Short-chain fatty acids and other microbial metabolites that provide additional information about activity within the intestinal environment.

Gut-Brain & Intestinal Signaling
Selected markers associated with intestinal barrier function and pathways involved in communication between the gut, immune system and nervous system.

Finding an organism or abnormal biomarker does not necessarily mean it is responsible for a patient’s symptoms. This is why interpretation and the patient’s overall clinical picture are important.

The Gut Is Connected to Whole-Body Health

Gut health can influence much more than digestion.

The gut-brain axis describes the complex two-way communication between the gastrointestinal tract and nervous system through neural, immune, hormonal, microbial and metabolic pathways. Research into this relationship continues to evolve.

The gastrointestinal system also participates in nutrient absorption, metabolism, immune and inflammatory signaling and hormonal signaling.

This is why RWell Center considers gut and microbiome health within a broader picture that may include:

Nutrition  •  Hormonal Health  •  Metabolic Health  •  Inflammation  •  Immune Health  •  Gut-Brain Signaling  •  Healthy Aging

Gut Health & Hormones
The relationship between the gut and hormones is an evolving area of research. The gastrointestinal environment and microbiome participate in the metabolism of certain hormones, while hormonal changes may also influence gastrointestinal function.

Rather than suggesting that gut testing diagnoses a hormonal disorder, these relationships can provide another piece of information when considering a patient’s overall hormonal and metabolic health.

Gut Health & Sexual Health
Sexual health is influenced by many factors, including hormones, cardiovascular health, metabolism, neurologic function, psychological health and inflammation.

Research continues to explore how the microbiome and gastrointestinal health may interact with some of these systems. Gut testing should therefore not be considered a diagnostic test for sexual dysfunction, but gut health may be one component of a broader evaluation of overall health and wellness.

Gut Health & Nutrition
The gastrointestinal tract plays a central role in the digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Evaluating digestive function alongside vitamin, mineral and nutritional status may provide a more complete picture for patients interested in nutrition, metabolic health, performance and healthy aging.

When Gastroenterology Evaluation Is Important

RWell Center’s role is to assist in evaluation, provide advanced testing and interpretation, and help patients determine appropriate next steps. We are not a substitute for a gastroenterologist.

Patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, persistent or severe abdominal pain, significant changes in bowel habits, anemia or other concerning symptoms should undergo appropriate conventional medical evaluation.

When medically indicated, this may include gastroenterology consultation, colonoscopy, endoscopy, imaging, laboratory testing or other diagnostic evaluation.

Gut Health as Part of the RWell Center Approach

The gastrointestinal system does not function in isolation.

Gut and microbiome health can be considered alongside other areas of RWell Center’s Life & Performance approach:

Hormonal & Metabolic Health  •  Nutrition & Nutrient Status  •  Environmental Exposures  •  Inflammation  •  Cardiovascular Health  •  Performance & Recovery  •  Healthy Aging
